ON THE NEW WORLD ORDER AND THE POSITION OF EUROPE

The growing global economic fragmentation, the obvious breakdown of multilateralism and the breakdown of international law are straining the world community, creating an unprecedented situation that places us before a profoundly uncertain new world order.

Europe must, of course, be attentive to whatever President Trump may decide, but it should also start worrying more about what it does or, perhaps better, what it does not do. Profound changes need to be made assuming that certain sectors (defense, energy and technology) are strategic for Europe and require heavy investment. Our loss of productivity, competitiveness and weight in the international economy, resulting from our endemic difficulty in overcoming national approaches and undertaking projects with a European dimension, is too heavy a burden.

This new world order, which is in the process of development, deserves Europe’s presence with the leading role that has marked its history over the last few centuries.
